sumblog 13 ( Wallenstein)

Immanuel Wallenstein theory of The World Systems stated there are many parts of the machine. Globalization. All parts work together in order for them to work.  Wallenstein theorized world economy is a large geographic zone within which there is also a division of labor.  There is no bound by any type of political structure. Historically, we have always been concerned with economics.

Often politics will discuss the new world order, this refers to any period of history evidencing a dramatic change in world political thought and the balance of power. The new world order is the transition of globalization process.  Wallenstein claimed that the world has always been a Capitalist world economy.

Wallenstein theorized that economically rich and poor counties have a role to play in the world. The periphery countries are the weakest. They often provide cheap labor and raw materials.  The raw materials produced are the resources the world needs in order to sustain.  There has always been a capitalist elite group of people who make the decisions. According to Wallenstein, each geographical country has a government to maintain its order, the authoritative figures who have sculpted politics.  Wallenstein suggesting there is a government within our government.

Wallenstein's model allows us to compare and contrast globalization and the change it has made in the world. One advantage is it does help boost the economy. Unfortunately, like all man, there is greed. There are countries that have little labor laws. The people ruling these countries are valuing the commodity income over the people who live in the country. The distributing of wealth in the world has been filled with corruption since the beginning.  This is one aspect of globalization that is flawed. People are working day and night to make little wages.  They are starving to death. There needs to be change as to how wealth is distributed.

Globalization is part of the world agenda, it is being socialized through mainstream media. As we are socialized, we adjust to globalization easier. The sociologist I have discussed in the previous blogs are all connected with the world today. Their individual theories and views have shaped the world into what it is today.

Sumblog 12: Anthony Giddens

Systems and structures exist in a dual relationship with each other.  They tend to produce and reproduce each other in an ongoing cycle. This is referred to as the "structuration process".  Anthony Giddens study of structuration theory deals with evolution and development of social group and organizations. Structuration is about social life and how it is more then random individual acts, but is merely determined by social forces

The mass is not focused merely on a micro nor a macro- level in society. Giddens suggests that human agency and social structure are in a relationship with each other and it is the repetition of acts of individual agents, which reproduces the structure.  Moral codes, traditions, institutions, can all be changed as time change. People can start ignoring them and replacing them with newer technology or views. His theory views groups or organizations as systems with "observable patterns of relationships and communicative interaction among people creating structures".

Behavior and structure are intertwined; people go through a socialization process and become dependent of the existing social structures, but at the same time social structures are being altered by their activity.  Rules Create the structure of a group of people. Roles and the resources of a group is what makes the group transform civilizations.  The assumptions of structorization are at which power structures are presented in the prginazition which guide the groups behavior.

This video is an example of power structures, and how the effects of their choices played a role in the Phyciactric Institutions.  Mental Health facilities have long been stigmatized for their abuse and inhumane ways of treating people. This is why... There are good people in the world who want to help, and there are people who use their greed as an excuse for genaside. Throughout  time, the government has controlled us through socialization, not just in America, but throughout out the world. Eugenics is the belief and practice of improving the genetic quality of human population.  The power structures throughout time consist of people involved in Eugenics. In 1930's The eugenics movement sterilized people in Mental institutions.

Sumblog 10 (Symbolism)

Being a parent is a gift, but it is also a responsibility. The parent has to face many obstacles when raising a child. Teaching them why we kill animals is a very dissatisfying topic to discuss with a toddler.  I have a two-year-old son who does not quite understand yet that he is eating an animal. The other day when I was giving my son animal crackers, I realized there was an animal on there. By putting the “animal” on something that tastes good to the child, it is subconsciously telling the child it is okay to eat animals.  This animal cracker had dual symbolism: the cracker takes good, and the animal was good to eat.  This is an example of social construction of reality.

Peter Berger explains how all "things" are socially constructed. Social construction includes Habitualization created by externalization.  Man has always been a social product to the world with no absolute meaning. Social order is achieved using symbols. A symbol is a thing that represents or stands for something other then the material object.  A material object can mean nothing other then what the object is. But when man looks at the object it can have a symbolic meaning, creating a dual representation to the material object.

Symbolic entities enter our world from birth, which are the socializing agents that change person views on reality.  The reality is that everything we perceive to be is social constructed.  The social order is necessary for a society to maintain.  There can be both beneficial and detrimental effects to the society.  Economics are the primary concern for the “lawmakers”. (It is also a fact that the “lawmakers” are also the richest 2 percent.) These lawmakers are the ones responsible for the socially constructed world. This is the New World Order coming into effect. The socializing agents that are in America today are essentially taking our ability to use our maximum potential as humans through the use symbols.

An infant at the age of eight months old have about 1,000 trillion synapses. As the child grows, at the age of ten, the child has 500 trillion. The final number of synapses is largely determined by the child's experiences in life. This can increase or decrease the number of synapses to about 25 percent.  The book “How to Raise a Brighter Child” explains this process of a child’s brain development and gives you “tools” to stimulate the child’s neurons in their brain.  Through my studies, I have found that creativity is very important to maintain as you grow.  The human brain works by counteracting with the left and the right hemisphere of the brain. If we lack creativity, our right side is weaker, which takes away our ability to use our maximum potential of our brain. The world is in a transition to a new age.  Being aware of the symbolism and the brain are crucial elements to understanding the world.

Blog 7: Jane Adams

Jane Adams and Ellen Gates Starr were the founders of the Hull house in 1889.  At this time, Chicago was a home to many poor African Americans whom had traveled North in search for a better life.  Immigrants and African Americans inhibited most of Chicago with barely enough money to feed their families. With the rise of small pox, people could not afford to go to the doctor. These people who lived in these conditions sacrificed racial conditions in the South for poverty and a bad environment. Children were forced tot grow up fast and help support their families. They had no education system, factory  conditions were dehumanizing.  Chicago was a city in need for structure.

Jane Adams goals for the Hull House were what she described as "the three R's": residence, research, and reform. This involved interactive studying with the people. Addams believed in personal experiences over theory.  She worked with these people and earned their trust. Social settlements like Gull house were created in response to industrialism, immigration and urbanization.  The hull house is one of the foundations for social work in America today. It had over 2000 residents each week in the second year it was open. Like many christian settlements, the Hull House was a secular foundation. Jane Addams was speculated a lot for this, but her work with society changed so many peoples lives. She may have not been popular during her time by the speculators, but she made history in the long run.  Addams believed in personal experiences over theory.  She worked with these people and earned their trust.

People did not know what to do when they lived in these conditions. Geography determines culture. These people who had their own individual culture were assimilated into the modern day technology. Yet there was no resources for them until the Hull House was built. Jane Addams somewhat molded these people into a civilized democratic society.  Was her work a form of socialism?

In Uzbekistan, the cotton industry is making the government a fortune.  Yet still, the civilians who live in the country live in poor conditions and are striving. In order to meet the government quota they force children as young as  7 years old to work in horrible conditions. These children are working up to 70 hours a week in horrible conditions.  These people are being dictated by their government.  There are companies who have stopped buying cotton products from them but chances are if you own a product made in china it is Uzbek cotton. These people can not help themselves.
